Today we are continuing our “Meet the Team” blog series by introducing our Assistant Manager, Stephanie! Stephanie joined our team in November and has been working hard to get everything in place for the big opening day!
Where are you from?
I grew up in Maryland, roughly 15 minutes away from the historic Harpers Ferry.
What is your educational background?
I studied Marine Biology, Biology, and Theater at the College of Charleston; I’m also studying with the Court of Master Sommeliers and the Cicerone Certification Program.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Presently I spend most of my free time studying for my next Sommelier and Cicerone exams. When I’m not studying, I love to travel and have visited over 15 different countries learning about their cultures and cuisines. Most recently I visited Ireland, and will hopefully be heading to Thailand next!
How did you get into the industry?
While in university, I was a bartender for the oldest yacht club in the nation. One of the wine reps was a Master Sommelier, and after seeing my interest in the craft beverage industry, he started working with me. Since then I’ve worked in a number of bars, restaurants, wineries and craft breweries which lead me to the Charlottesville area.
What personal goals do you have for The Tasting Room & Taphouse?
Personally, I’d like to be able to share my passion for local food, wine, and beer. Enjoying good food and drink with friends is one of life’s most basic pleasures. I want to help create wonderful memories for our guests at the Tasting Room and Taphouse, because at the end of the day the experiences we share with our loved ones are the most valuable. Some of my favorite wines and beers are favorites because of the company I had when trying them for the first time.
What is your favorite drink at the moment?
That’s a difficult decision! For beer, I’ve always loved the Weihenstephaner Festbier because the brewery is just north of where my family is from in Munich. When it comes to wine I have a pretty varied taste. My top red pick- 2008 Vietti Barbera d’Alba; top white pick- 2009 Mme Aly Duhr Auxerrois Grand Premier Cru. But when I can’t decide what to have- you’ll see me with a glass of bubbly!
What is your favorite thing to do in Charlottesville on a day off?
I enjoy visiting new breweries, wineries, and distilleries in the area; and if the weather is nice, I will be found kayaking on the local rivers.
